Ronnie Coleman: All about the legendary bodybuilder

Ronald Dean Coleman is an iconic figure in bodybuilding in the United States, and around the world. Affectionately nicknamed “Big Ron”, this athlete has accumulated several titles and distinctions that make him a reference in this discipline. A look back at the career and prowess of one of the most famous Bodybuilders in the world.

The private life and bodybuilding beginnings of Ronnie Coleman

Born on May 13, 1964, in Louisiana in the United States, Ronald Dean Coleman studied at Grambling State University. With an accounting license, he quickly obtained a position as a reserve policeman. He will fulfill this function until 2003.

From his early childhood, Ronnie Coleman was interested in American Football, a sport that requires excellent physical condition. He then embarked on a series of exercises and training in order to prepare himself physically for this discipline. It was then that one of his closest colleagues and friend suggested to him the idea of embarking on bodybuilding. You should know that the young Louisiana native was already in extraordinary shape with exceptionally large thighs (91 cm).

A few months later, Brian Dobson will offer the young athlete to coach him. Ronnie Coleman will therefore go very regularly to the gym that Brian owned. With the latter, he will participate in his first international competition in Texas.

Ronnie Coleman's Greatest Hits

Ronnie Coleman owes his worldwide reputation to the trophies and victories he won during the various competitions in which he participated.

Already in 1990, Ronnie Coleman took part in the Mr. Texas bodybuilding contest held in the same state. He won the title, then entered the NPC championship which also took place the same year in Texas. He also emerges victorious.

However, in addition to these distinctions, Big Ron is particularly known for having dominated Joe Weider's Olympia Weekend from 1998 to 2005. This is the most famous bodybuilding competition in the United States. This international event rewards professional Bodybuilders every year. With his 8 titles, Ronnie becomes the bodybuilder who has obtained the most awards at this competition.

Moreover, apart from these titles, Ronnie Coleman has also been declared the winner of high-level competitions. For example, his victories at:

  • professional world championships in 1999 and 2000
  • Canada Pro Cup in 1995 and 1996
  • British Grand Prix in 2000 and 2004.

Finally, we also note his successful participation in the Grand Prix of Holland, Russia, and Finland.

In 2009, at the age of 45, the famous bodybuilder officially announced his professional retirement. However, he continues to practice and remains well known in the community.

Ronnie Coleman's Training Logic

Since the beginning of his career, Ronnie Coleman has adopted a very sustained training rhythm. He defended bodybuilding exercises that he describes as “traditional”. These include squats, lateral raises, and the deadlift. The bodybuilder made very little use of guided devices for his exercise sessions. The eight-time winner of Mister Olympia regularly practiced Powerlifting exercises (athletic strength).

Regarding his training frequency, it should be noted that Big Ron exercised 6 days out of 7 . Overall, his program revolved around the one-arm Rowing with dumbbell and the Traction with the high pulley.
